Please make yourself aware of the genetic diseases that can affect the border collie and only buy from breeders who know that their puppies will not be affected by these conditions. At least one parent should be tested 'clear' (or clear by parentage) for each condition (namely, CEA, CL & TNS).
In addition, please ask the breeder about hip and elbow x-raying and scoring. Breeding animals should be x-rayed and scored - this is the ONLY way to assess the condition of the hips and elbows!
It is YOUR responsibility as a buyer to educate yourself regarding the health issues that can affect the breed. Just because a breeder is registered does NOT mean they are ethical.
Finally, our personal recommendation is that you only purchase your puppy from a breeder who is involved in either breed showing, herding, agility, or obedience. If a breeder is not involved with any 'sport' with their pets, then for what purpose do they breed? Profit? An easy way to find this information out is to ask the breeder how many ANKC titles they have achieved with their dogs, and in what disciplines.
Please do not support breeding for profit!
